What I understood of Web 3.0?

There is a buzz around me about Web 3.0. Tutorials are lined up teaching you to build your first Web 3.0 app or website. Well, this article is dedicated to clear the cloud of doubt about what Web 3.0 is and how its is different from the previous ones. I know reading a blog is a tough decision and I can't explain you all of it in just one blog, so this article will pin point the features of Web 3.0

The Evolution of Web as we see

The web has evolved a lot in years. Its evolution is often partitioned in three stages, namely Web1.0, Web 2.0 and Web 3.0.

What is Web 1.0 ?

Well Web 1.0 is the first iteration of web. Web 1.0's development period was mostly during late 90's and early 20's when the content creators were mostly developers delivering which delivered content basically in text or image format. These sites basically served static content rather than dynamic HTML seen in today's sites. You can basically think of these sites as read only sites.

What is Web 2.0?

The web of today is what is called as Web 2.0. It is interactive and social an because of it's simplicity millions of people around the world can craft their thoughts and share it to the world to see it. Web 2.0 is not just developer centred. Because of its resourcefulness creating any content has become a lot simpler than earlier. Well, the web as it is today maybe very simple and fun and everything but it is dangerous in its own way and has its own disadvantages. Well I should not call it disadvantages rather areas where it could be better. There are two such fields where I can make you agree :

Monetisation

Security

I would like to brief out these two points.

Monetisation of apps/services

Companies today follow a common model of growth which is not sustainable. When a developer or a company launches an app it initially focuses on expanding its user reach. They do not focus on monetisation and keep on increasing and locking their user reach. Eventually they need to turn profit. And mostly to run the company they turn towards venture capitalists and angel investors etc. Getting into this system brings a negative effect on the performance of the company and also the user experience. Because the outside investors expect a return on their investment. To arrange this return companies turn towards two ways : ads or selling user information. Most Web 2.0 companies like Google, Twitter, Meta etc run on this model engineering their functions based on user data which they centralise and use.

Security

It is well known about the security breaches of most of the tech giants. In Web 2.0 you cannot control how your user data flows and gets stored. Companies store and use user data without their consent. Governments peak into your daily life as they control the banks and stop a lot of services and create chaos.

Well then what is Web 3.0?

There are a lot of fundamental differences between the two versions if I can say but decentralisation of the web is at its core. Decentralisation of web has been a topic of debate for a long period of time and Web 3.0 may just solve that issue.

Presently developers develop their apps and deploy them on servers run by few organisations(cloud service providers ).

Well, Web 3.0 application run on blockchain, decentralised network of many peer to peer servers etc. That is why these apps are mostly referred as Dapps(decentralised apps). When talking about web 3.0 you will come across term cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency can provide all financial incentive to the participants of the network directly. So, when consumers pay for the services of the app the money directly goes to the participants of the network.

Decentralisation surely will remove the unnecessary intermediaries like cloud services etc.

Payment security will surely increase in web 3.0 as it will all based on cryptocurrency. Tokens or crypto tokens have introduced a form of payment that is frictionless. It is different from present electronic payments which is a complex system. It also requires you to hand over your sensitive information and personal data in order to use them. But with crypto all you have to do is to install a wallet like Metamask and you can start with payment. Integrability of these wallets on your web 3.0 apps will also be very easy.

There are a lot of such points and in this topic the whole blockchain can be explained. I'm a developer who is getting ready to transition into the Web 3.0 space from a traditional development background. So I wanted to start building to get a sense of what the development experience felt like. And I wanted to get an understanding of the types of apps that we can build today. I dove right in and will keep on documenting my track in the Web 3 space.
